How TCM is Revolutionizing Global Health: Insights from the Bangkok 2025 Summit (2025)

The Power of Traditional Chinese Medicine: A Global Health Revolution

Unveiling a New Era of Healthcare

In a world facing unprecedented health challenges, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has emerged as a powerful tool, ready to revolutionize global healthcare. But here's where it gets controversial: can this ancient practice, when combined with modern technologies, truly make a difference in our modern health crisis?

At a recent forum in Thailand, experts gathered to discuss the potential of TCM in addressing global health issues. And this is the part most people miss: it's not just about ancient wisdom; it's about integrating tradition with innovation to create a healthier future for all.

The Global Recognition of TCM

Adrian Cheng Chi-kong, a Hong Kong entrepreneur and co-founder of the nonprofit global health platform 'We Are The World', kicked off the 'Bangkok 2025 - Global Biohealth, Artificial Intelligence Innovation, and Traditional Medicine Fusion Cooperation Summit' with an inspiring message. He highlighted how TCM, with its millennia-old wisdom, has finally gained global recognition, especially over the past decade.

The event brought together leading experts from various fields, including TCM, biotechnology, regenerative medicine, and AI, to explore the potential of these disciplines working together. The summit, organized by 'We Are The World', aimed to bridge the gap between traditional and modern medicine, offering a unique platform for collaboration and innovation.

Addressing Global Health Challenges

Cheng emphasized the urgent need to tackle cancer and noncommunicable diseases, also known as chronic diseases. With approximately 20 million new cancer cases and 9.7 million cancer-related deaths worldwide in 2022 (according to WHO statistics from 2024), the scale of the problem is immense. Additionally, noncommunicable diseases claimed at least 43 million lives in 2021, with the majority of these deaths occurring in low and middle-income countries, as per a WHO fact sheet released in September.

Phinij Jarusombat, Thailand's former deputy prime minister and minister of public health, shared his belief that true progress in healthcare lies in integration. He highlighted the importance of combining Eastern and Western approaches, traditional knowledge, and modern innovation, as well as collaboration between the public and private sectors.

However, despite the rapid advancements in TCM, artificial intelligence, regenerative medicine, and genomics, Phinij noted that there is still a disconnect between these technologies and the patients who need them most. He emphasized the need for cooperation to bridge this gap and ensure that these advancements reach those suffering from cancer, chronic diseases, and neurodegenerative disorders.

Building a Regional Medical Hub: Thailand's Vision

Phinij, who is also the president of the Thai-Chinese Cultural Relationship Council, spoke about Thailand's ambition to become a regional medical hub. He highlighted the successful cooperation between Thailand and China in digital health, medical training, and cross-border investment, which has already yielded positive results.

Phinij envisioned a new 'Health Silk Road', inspired by the ancient Maritime Silk Road, where knowledge, innovation, and care can flow freely, connecting civilizations and improving global health.

The Significance of TCM Integration

Yan Lijin, chairman of the China Silk Road Group and executive vice-chairman of the Traditional Chinese Medicine Culture Congress, announced a collaboration between his organization and 'We Are The World' during his speech. He emphasized the importance of this partnership, believing that the deep integration of TCM with biotechnology, regenerative medicine, and AI will be a key solution, both now and in the future, to addressing health issues across the human life cycle, from maintenance to treatment.

Yan highlighted the key advantages of TCM: its simplicity, convenience, affordability, and effectiveness, making it a valuable addition to healthcare systems, especially in less developed regions. In developed regions, TCM can offer personalized alternatives for chronic disease management, rehabilitation, and integrative medicine.

Personal Stories and the Impact of TCM

Michael Chin, co-founder of 'We Are The World', shared his personal experience with TCM and acupuncture, which, combined with regenerative medicine, helped him manage hypertension and his wife's severe tinnitus. Chin emphasized the need to break down information barriers to resolve physical health issues.

Sranyoo Chanate, co-organizer of 'We Are The World' in Thailand and CEO of Kluaynamthai Hospital in Bangkok, spoke about the hospital's use of traditional Thai and Chinese medicine to treat the elderly. He believes that the integration of modern medicine and TCM will shape the future of healthcare.

Sorapoj Techakraisri, another co-organizer of 'We Are The World' in Thailand and founder of Thailand's Pace Development Corp, expressed his hope that the summit would not only provide a platform for discussion and sharing of the latest healthcare technologies but also offer accessible solutions to improve people's health.

The forum highlighted the potential of TCM to address global health challenges and the importance of collaboration and integration to make a real impact. As we move forward, the question remains: Can TCM, when combined with modern technologies, truly revolutionize global healthcare? What are your thoughts on this potential future of medicine? Feel free to share your opinions and engage in the discussion!
