ADAS features like lane-keeping assist and automatic emergency braking are now standard in over 90% of new cars, yet the industry seems woefully unprepared. More than half of garages either outsource this work, costing up to £300 per vehicle, or avoid it altogether. And this is the part most people miss: only 17.5% of garages plan to invest in ADAS training in the next year. Why? Many cite high equipment costs, staff shortages, and a perceived lack of customer demand. The Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) has sounded a similar alarm, revealing that only 7,572 UK technicians—a mere 3% of the automotive workforce—are qualified to work on ADAS. Nearly 15% of garages have lost business or faced delays due to their inability to perform in-house calibrations, yet most admit they have no immediate plans to invest in training or equipment. Why? But there’s another angle: many garages believe customers aren’t demanding ADAS services yet, making it hard to prioritize future-proofing over daily operations.

Independent workshops are calling for clearer industry standards, stronger consumer awareness campaigns, and easier access to training and equipment.
