The residents of Annehurst Village are on a mission to make their neighborhood safer, especially for the students of Annehurst Elementary School. During peak school hours, the intersection near the school sees an average of 83 pedestrians and 39 cyclists, while approximately 340 vehicles pass through, many of which disregard stop signs and speed limits.
"We need to take action to protect our children," said Linda Stutz, a concerned parent and association member. But here's where it gets controversial: despite the community's efforts, some residents feel that not enough is being done.
"It's been talked about for years, but we need real solutions," emphasized Michael Batchelder, a local parent. The residents are advocating for enhanced safety measures, such as additional signage and raised crosswalks, to mitigate the risks.
The city has responded with plans to implement technology-based solutions in 2026, including updated flashing lights to alert drivers of the school zone.
